"Family of the Mountain" in its posthumous edition (printed around 1957 after Onchi's 1955 death) brings together two characteristic Onchi preoccupations: the family as an emotional and social subject, and the mountain as a form of geological grandeur. The family unit situated within or against the mountain landscape suggests both the human community's smallness relative to geological scale and its persistence within that scale — the family enduring against the permanence of the mountain. This posthumous printing continued the dissemination of Onchi's work after his death.
