"Inside the Hogaku Theater (Hogakuza naikei)" of 1929, from the series "New One Hundred Views of Tokyo," depicts the interior of one of Tokyo's major theatrical venues from Onchi's characteristic elevated perspective. The layered architecture of a major theater — the tiered galleries, the central floor, the elaborate proscenium — gave Onchi a subject combining architectural and social observation: the audience's arrangement within the space reflecting the social hierarchies of Taisho-era Tokyo as much as the performance itself. This is one of Onchi's most accomplished documentary subjects.
