Hagiwara's poetry expressed a darkness and intensity that Onchi rendered formally through a fractured, intense composition — the poet's face assembled from observational fragments that collectively convey the specific quality of his literary sensibility. The 1955 memorial edition appeared in the year of Onchi's own death.
