"Portrait of the Poet Hagiwara Sakutaro, Author of Ice Island" — this 1943 original of Onchi's most celebrated portrait, here printed in a 1955 memorial edition — depicts the poet Hagiwara Sakutaro (1886-1942) in what became Onchi's definitive image of a creative consciousness at the extreme of its inner life. Hagiwara's poetry expressed a darkness and intensity that Onchi rendered formally through a fractured, intense composition — the poet's face assembled from observational fragments that collectively convey the specific quality of his literary sensibility. The 1955 memorial edition appeared in the year of Onchi's own death.
