"Portrait of the Poet Hagiwara Sakutaro, Author of Ice Island, 1943" is Onchi's 1943 original version of this definitive portrait — printed while Hagiwara was still recently dead (he died in 1942) and while Japan was engaged in the Pacific War. The portrait was made in the spirit of memorial and tribute, Onchi's formal resources fully mobilized to honor a poet whose work he deeply admired. This first edition of the portrait would be reprinted multiple times after Onchi's own death, becoming one of the most reproduced works in the [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) tradition.
