$300–$3,000. Theatrical portraits are highly collectible. Good actor portraits: $800–$1,500. Key value factors: Ota's kabuki prints are modestly priced. Bold, well-preserved actor portraits are most sought after.
Created around 1950, this [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print portrays the kabuki actor Matsumoto Koshiro in the role of Benkei, the legendary warrior monk. Benkei is one of the most beloved figures in Japanese folklore, a fierce giant who served the tragic hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune and is best known for his last stand at the bridge of Gojo, where he died standing upright. The role of Benkei demands physical power and vocal projection from the actor, and Matsumoto Koshiro's portrayal would feature the elaborate kumadori face paint, massive robes, and warrior posture associated with this aragoto (rough style) role. Ota Masamitsu renders the actor's painted face and costumed figure with the precision that kabuki portraiture demands, each line of kumadori makeup serving both theatrical and artistic purposes. The oban format accommodates the full visual impact of the warrior monk's imposing presence.
