$2,000–$15,000. Common subjects: $2,000–$4,000. Key value factors: As a living artist continuing the shin-hanga tradition, Binnie's prints are investment-quality. Limited editions and larger formats are most valued.
From Binnie's Large-Head Kabuki Portraits series (Kabuki okubi-e), this print depicts Ichikawa Danshiro IV in the role of Benkei from Kanjincho — the warrior-monk who protects his master Yoshitsune through the play's famous confrontation at the Ataka barrier. The okubi-e format, derived from Sharaku's great kabuki portraits of 1794, brings the actor's face and expression to the foreground, where every element of the performance makeup becomes a subject of intense scrutiny. Binnie's version honors both Danshiro's performance and Sharaku's tradition.
