The Gion district of Kyoto—the geisha quarter, with its historic machiya townhouses, stone-paved alleys, and the looming presence of Yasaka Shrine—was one of Saito's most repeatedly explored urban environments. The 1966 (J) version, edition 51 of 100, is one of multiple prints he made of this neighborhood over many years, each designated with a letter suffix. The J variant may show a specific alleyway or architectural detail he had not previously isolated, the sustained series a record of deepening familiarity.
