The simple title Kyoto encompasses the full range of Saito's engagement with the city—temple roofs, stone garden walls, latticed machiya facades, the lantern-lit paths of the geisha districts—compressed into a single image. This undated print may have served as a kind of summary statement, an attempt to capture not a specific location but the accumulated feeling of the city as he had come to understand it through decades of looking, the essential geometry of the old capital.
