Description
The 1942 Lake Scenery belongs to Saito's early mature period, when he was developing the flat-plane approach that would define his career. Japanese lakes—whether the famous scenic spots like Suwa or Biwa or the smaller mountain lakes of his home region—provided him with a subject that combined the horizontal expanse he loved with the mountain reflections that compressed that space into pure geometric pattern. Water as mirror: the lake doubling the landscape into a reversible symmetry.
