Description
The 1942 Landscape with Farm is among Saito's earliest dateable works—made in his mid-thirties as he was establishing the formal approach that would make his reputation. The farmscape subject places him squarely in the sosaku-hanga movement's interest in ordinary Japanese life, but his treatment already shows the reductive tendency: fields rendered as flat planes of color, the farm buildings simplified to their essential mass, the whole composition structured through geometric relationships rather than atmospheric observation.
