May in Aizu (I) captures the transformation of Saito's home landscape between winter and summer—the deep snow gone, the paddies flooded and reflecting sky, the farmhouses suddenly more visible in the landscape without their white burden. May in the Aizu basin was also the moment of rice planting, the fields filling with workers, the region's agricultural cycle resuming after its long hibernation. The (I) variant suggests this was the ninth in a series exploring seasonal change in the region.
