Description
The Oku no Hosomichi series documents Saito's journey along the route traced by the haiku poet Matsuo Basho in 1689, and Junenji at Sukagawa was where Basho is recorded as having composed poems about bush clover and evening cicadas. Saito's treatment preserves that literary atmosphere by refusing picturesque effect—the temple precinct becomes flat geometric form, architecture without tourism, a place defined by what the great poet felt rather than what the eye immediately sees.
