Description
The rice field plowing scene belongs to the annual cycle of agricultural imagery that runs through Saito's work—the sequence of spring flooding, planting, summer tending, autumn harvest, and winter fallow that structured life in the Aizu region of his childhood. Plowing before flooding, with a horse or ox drawing the plow through the spring-soft earth, was the first act of the agricultural year, and Saito renders it with the reverence he accorded all fundamental human labor.
