Description
The 1963 print designated simply as sosaku-hanga—creative print—may represent an experimental or self-referential work where the medium itself becomes the subject, or perhaps a print whose subject was unrecorded and whose medium designation served as its title in collection records. Saito was deeply committed to the sosaku-hanga philosophy of artist control over the entire printing process, and a work titled for its own medium would be entirely consistent with that self-aware commitment to the art form.
