Shoji katsura—the translucent paper sliding screens of Katsura Imperial Villa—were among the most formally compelling elements of the villa's architecture, organizing interior space through a grid of wooden framework and [washi](/glossary/washi) paper that filtered natural light into the rooms beyond. For Saito the shoji grid was a ready-made geometric composition, the woodblock medium's own flat logic meeting its architectural equivalent—both systems of organized planes creating spatial experience from the relationship of line and surface.
