Solitude, Kyoto (1955), edition 70 of 150, places a figure—probably a woman, possibly a maiko or apprentice geisha—in the characteristic atmosphere of the city's quieter precincts. The large edition (150 impressions) suggests this was among Saito's most commercially successful figure prints of the mid-1950s. Solitude as a title for a Kyoto figure suggests a woman apart from the social performance of her role, caught in a moment of private withdrawal.
