Description
The 1966 Tahiti (B), edition 10 of 50, shows Saito taking his reductive approach to one of art history's most loaded landscapes—the Polynesian paradise that Gauguin had transformed into Western art's most mythologized exotic destination sixty years earlier. Saito's Tahiti would have been entirely his own, the Pacific light and vegetation filtered through his Japanese formal sensibility rather than a European primitivist one. A small edition of 10 suggests an experimental approach to this unusual subject.
