The 1945 Village in Aizu belongs to the pivotal year of Japan's defeat, made when Saito was in his late thirties and the immediate postwar reconstruction of Japanese culture was just beginning. His turn to the familiar Aizu village at this moment suggests a return to foundations—the place of his origin as a source of formal certainty in a period of national upheaval. The village street, thatched roofs visible above low walls, rendered in the early version of his geometric style.
