Mito, the castle town in Ibaraki Prefecture associated with the Tokugawa branch domain and the Kodokan domain school, offered Saito an architectural environment distinct from his typical Kyoto and Nara subjects. The Village of Mito likely depicts the traditional townscape of the castle-town periphery rather than the well-known sites, finding in the ordinary residential architecture of a regional city the same geometric fundamentals he extracted from more prestigious locations.
