White Dream operates in the abstract register that Saito visited increasingly in the later decades of his career—forms hovering between landscape and pure composition, shapes that might be snow-covered hills or simply masses of light. The whiteness here is not empty but structural: in the woodblock medium, white is the paper showing through, the place where the carver chose not to cut, making absence the primary material. Few printmakers understood that negative space with greater precision.
