The Woman-Bunraku 1 print places a female figure—a bunraku puppet representing a female character type—in the same close-up frontal treatment Saito gave to his other bunraku subjects. Female puppet characters in the bunraku repertoire include tragic heroines, devoted wives, and vengeful lovers, each character type expressed through specific costume, wig, and facial type. Saito's rendering would have captured the formal qualities of the puppet's constructed femininity—an artifice of feeling as compelling as any natural face.
