Bodhisattva Manjusri (Monju Bosatsu) — the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, traditionally depicted with a sword to cut through ignorance and a text of sacred scripture — appears in this print from the "Ten Great Disciples of the Buddha Sakyamuni" series, the block carved in 1948 and printed during the Showa period. Monju was one of Munakata's most frequently depicted sacred figures, wisdom being the quality he most associated with the creative act of carving: the knife cutting through the wood's resistance as the sword of Monju cuts through the resistance of ignorance.
