Description
Furona, known in Pali as Punna Mantaniputta, was recognized among the ten principal disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha as the foremost teacher of the dharma. Munakata's series on the Great Disciples portrays each figure as a distinct spiritual type, differentiated through carving rhythm and gestural posture rather than iconographic attribute. Furona is typically associated with preaching and compassionate communication, qualities Munakata may have rendered through an open or oratorical pose. The series belongs to the tradition of Buddhist figure printing that Munakata elevated into fine-art sosaku-hanga practice, each block cut with the artist's characteristic staccato energy. The deliberately rough surface quality—visible tool marks left in situ—reinforces the sense of each figure as a freshly summoned presence rather than a polished devotional image.
