"Heavy Snow at Takashiro (the fence of...)" (Fukabuka no saku) from 1957 captures a snowfall of such intensity that it transforms the architectural setting — the fence, the structure behind it — into a study in accumulated white. The subtitle "fukabuka" (deep, heavy) intensifies the image of snow not as a picturesque overlay but as a physical force imposing its own geometry on the human-built world. Munakata's handling of snow carried none of the delicate aesthetic appreciation of traditional Japanese snow imagery; his snow was heavy and serious, a natural fact making its presence felt.
