Maudgalyayana (Mokukenren) — the disciple of supernatural powers, who appears in both the earlier "Ten Great Disciples" print and here in the "Two Bodhisattva and Ten Great Disciples" series (carved 1939, reprinted 1968) — returns as a subject that clearly engaged Munakata's imagination. The disciple whose powers bridged the human and divine realms — who could descend into hell to rescue his mother and ascend to the heavens to seek the Buddha's teaching — was a figure of active, dynamic sacred energy that Munakata's carving style could render with particular force.
