Typical Price
$1,000–$15,000. Common landscapes: $1,000–$3,000. Key value factors: Kasamatsu's early shin-hanga works (pre-1955) tend to be more valued than his later sosaku-hanga production.
Description
Lake Motosu in Yamanashi Prefecture — the westernmost of the Fuji Five Lakes — reflects the cone of Mount Fuji from a more distant and less frequented vantage than the more famous Kawaguchiko views. Kasamatsu likely found here the combination of clear mountain water and the volcano's near-perfect profile that he sought in his Fuji landscape series. The lake's deep blue, fed by snowmelt filtered through volcanic rock, provided him with a chromatic foil for the mountain's pale summit and the surrounding forest.
