Rainy Evening at the Yasaka Pagoda
八坂の塔 雨の夕

八坂の塔 雨の夕
Kyoto's Yasaka Pagoda veiled in evening rain is a composition of extraordinary atmospheric depth. If published by Watanabe, lifetime editions command $1,500-$3,500 given the premium placed on rain scenes. The pagoda's silhouette emerging through the rain creates a sense of timelessness that makes this one of Kasamatsu's most emotionally resonant designs.
The five-story Yasaka Pagoda in Kyoto's Higashiyama district stands in evening rain, 1932, its silhouette sharpened by the wet darkness while light catches the ceramic tile edges of each overhanging roof. The Yasaka Pagoda — one of Kyoto's most recognizable landmarks, visible from the streets of the Higashiyama district — presented Kasamatsu with a vertical subject ideally suited to rain composition. Each eave becomes a cascade, the tile surfaces catch light unpredictably, and the rain itself creates dynamic diagonal movement against the pagoda's vertical form.
