Description
Cherry trees erupt in bloom along the garden precincts of Heian Jingu shrine in Kyoto, the shrine's distinctive Otenmon gate and sweeping rooflines visible beyond the curtain of blossoms. Heian Jingu — a partial reconstruction of the ancient Imperial Palace complex, built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding — combines architectural grandeur with some of Kyoto's finest cherry planting. Kasamatsu renders this Kyoto spring scene with the atmospheric sensitivity that characterized his finest landscape work.
