Description
The ruins of the ancient checkpoint at Shitomae — しとまえの関址 — appear as weathered stones and overgrown earthworks in a landscape gradually reclaiming what human authority once maintained. Barrier stations controlled movement along Japan's main roads throughout the feudal period, and their remains carry the weight of a policing system that shaped travel and commerce for centuries. Kasamatsu's interest in these historical remnants reflects his broader concern with the physical traces of the past that survive in the modern Japanese landscape.
