The historic hot spring town of Shuzenji on the Izu Peninsula is rendered here without the rain of Kasamatsu's other Shuzenji composition. Watanabe lifetime editions sell for $800-$2,000. This clearer atmospheric treatment reveals more architectural and landscape detail, offering a complementary view to the more dramatically atmospheric rain version.
The Shuzenji hot springs in Izu appear in this 1937 color woodblock, the thermal resort's characteristic combination of river, wooden inns, and bridge captured in summer foliage. Shuzenji Onsen occupies both sides of the Katsura River as it flows through a narrow mountain valley, and Kasamatsu's composition likely shows the bridge connecting the two banks, the river between them, and the encircling hills. The print belongs to his active Watanabe period when his depictions of Japanese onsen towns were particularly sought.
