Spring rain falls on the moat surrounding the old Edo Castle grounds — now the Imperial Palace — the surface of the water broken by drops while cherry petals drift from overhanging trees onto the grey water. Kasamatsu's mastery of rain in combination with seasonal subjects gives this composition a double transience: the rain itself passing, and the cherry blossom beneath it already falling. The moat's still geometry contrasts with the movement of rain and petals.
