東京名所四十八景 目録
by Shōsai Ikkei
This is the title page (mokuroku) of Shōsai Ikkei's 'Forty-Eight Famous Views of Tokyo' series of around 1871, which lists the forty-eight individual views included in the series and identifies the artist's signature and seal. The title-page sheet was a standard convention of multi-print [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) series from the late Edo period onward, allowing the publisher to advertise the scope of the project and providing collectors a reference for the order and identification of the individual sheets. Ikkei's mokuroku presents the series title 'Tōkyō meisho shijūhakkei' (東京名所四十八景) in a decorative cartouche surrounded by the listed view names organized by Tokyo's principal districts, with the artist's signature 'Shōsai Ikkei ga' (昇斎一景画) and the publisher's mark below. As a paratextual document, the sheet is essential for the bibliographic study of the series and for the modern reconstruction of its original presentation order. It is held by the Edo-Tokyo Museum, whose collection of the series provides the most complete surviving documentation of one of the principal topographic ukiyo-e series of the early Meiji period.
