Description
Catalog number C-24 gives an unusual vantage point for a Shotei landscape: looking outward from the top of a pagoda, the viewer sees the temple grounds, surrounding town, and distant countryside laid out below. The pagoda's height transforms the familiar horizontal landscape into a bird's-eye prospect, the rooftops and treetops below giving way to the hazy middle distance and an expansive sky. The bokashi treatment of the panoramic sky at this elevated viewpoint required careful gradation from the near-horizontal edge of the observation point upward.
