Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Izumi Bridge in rain — "Izumibashi no ame" — renders the arching stone bridge over the Izumi River under a summer downpour, the rain creating vertical lines across the surface while the bridge's reflection in the swollen water below breaks into fragments. Shotei's circa 1927–1932 treatment uses the rain's visual language to soften the architectural precision of the bridge into something more atmospheric and immediate. The composition is among his finest bridge-in-rain images, using [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) to blend sky, rain, and reflected water into a continuous environmental effect.
