Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Kakei — a mountain stream cascading in rapids — was a subject dear to Shotei's landscape sensibility: the dynamic movement of water through rocky terrain, the spray and foam caught in the moment of impact, the forest and stone unchanged around the perpetual motion of the falls. The parenthetical "Shotei" in the title may identify this as one of his signed compositions from a specific series or album. Shotei's water compositions required careful carving to capture the varied rhythms of falling and cascading water.
