Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Katsushika, the river district in northeastern Tokyo associated with the [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) artist Katsushika Hokusai, presented Shotei with a landscape of flat farmland, canals, and the Arakawa and Edo Rivers. The district retained its rural character well into the twentieth century, its low-lying fields and waterways offering a contrast to the urbanizing center of the city. Shotei's treatment honors the Hokusai association while bringing his own atmospheric sensibility to the flat, water-rich landscape of this traditionally agricultural area.
