Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Catalog number M-34 shows a country house — "Futayado," perhaps a specific inn or rural residence — under the full moon, the thatched or tiled roof catching the lunar light while the surrounding garden or farmyard lies in gentle shadow. Shotei's rural moonlight scenes possess a quality of almost complete stillness — the countryside at night, the moon high enough to illuminate without casting deep shadows, the world simplified into pale surfaces and dark masses. The "old country house" designation gives the scene a nostalgic quality, the moon shining on a traditional Japan.
