Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
From an unspecified harbor, the moon rises or hangs above the water — fishing and transport vessels at anchor in the foreground, their reflections broken by the slight chop, the lunar disc above them casting a silver path across the water. Shotei's harbor moonlight compositions combine the maritime world of working Japan with the classical moongazing tradition, grounding the celestial subject in the specificities of real harbors and real boats. The atmospheric [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) treatment around the moon gives the composition its characteristic nocturnal glow.
