Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Nihonmatsu in Fukushima Prefecture — a castle town of the Date and later Niwa clans — presents Shotei with a regional landscape from Japan's northeastern interior, away from the more commonly depicted Pacific and Inland Sea coasts. The Nihonmatsu area was known for its chrysanthemum displays and its castle ruins on the hill above the town, giving the location a particular combination of horticultural and historical interest. Shotei's treatment of this inland town suggests his range extended well beyond the famous scenic sites to quieter regional centers.
