Shotei's landscapes are his most widely available works. Signed lifetime editions with strong color and condition represent good collector value. Post-earthquake reprints lacking signatures and seals are common and trade at lower prices.
Flat-bottomed river boats drift through the evening on a Japanese waterway — the boatmen's poles or oars catching the last light, the water's surface a deepening reflection of the dimming sky. Shotei renders the boat traffic of Japanese rivers with the same atmospheric attention he brought to harbor and coastal subjects, the intimate scale of river transport providing a human dimension absent from open-sea compositions. The evening light, working through careful [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation, transforms the working river into a scene of considerable lyric beauty.
