Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
The Sakawa River bridge at evening in a second version — "V2" suggesting Shotei made at least two distinct treatments of this composition. The Sakawa River flows through Odawara in Kanagawa Prefecture toward the sea, its lower reaches crossed by this bridge that Shotei evidently found worth revisiting. The two versions may differ in the position of the bridge relative to the frame, the time of day, or the specific quality of the evening light — each exploring a different solution to the same compositional problem.
