Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Sawatari in Joshu (Gunma Prefecture) was a small hot spring town in the mountains of the Kanto interior, its setting in a narrow river valley surrounded by steep forested slopes. The "Joshu Sawatari" title places this firmly in the regional geography of inland Japan that Shotei documented alongside the more famous coastal and mountain sites. The spa town's combination of thermal springs, mountain scenery, and traditional inn culture made it representative of a type of Japanese destination that existed in hundreds of variations across the country.
