Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Tama — possibly the Tama River that flows from the western mountains through the southern suburbs of Tokyo to the bay — presented Shotei with one of the most varied river landscapes accessible from the city. The Tama's upper reaches flowed through mountain gorges, its middle sections through agricultural plains, and its lower reaches through the growing suburbs. Shotei's treatment of the Tama location captures a specific moment in this river's passage, the compositional elements chosen to convey the character of this particular stretch.
