Bamboo grove by Henmi Takashi — Japanese Woodblock print

Bamboo grove

by Henmi Takashi

Medium:
Woodblock print

Description

A bamboo grove rendered in Henmi's woodblock technique — the vertical mass of tall culms and their feathery leaves creating a composition of strong vertical thrust and filtered light. Bamboo subjects appear throughout the Japanese printmaking tradition as vehicles for exploring the particular quality of light that filters through dense stands of bamboo, and the sound of wind through the leaves that is as characteristic of a bamboo grove as its visual appearance. Henmi's version brings his sosaku-hanga graphic sensibility to this classic subject.
