Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The Kurobe River gorge in Toyama prefecture is one of Japan's most dramatic landscapes — a deep ravine cut through the Hida Mountains where precipitous cliffs plunge to rushing rapids below. The Juji Gorge (crossed by a rope bridge at the J-shaped bend) was a destination for artists and hikers who sought the raw grandeur of alpine terrain. Henmi's rendering of this dramatic landscape demonstrates his willingness to leave the urban and coastal subjects of his Tokyo period for the mountains of the Japanese interior.
