Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The Takegawa River — a tributary in the mountainous interior of Japan — rushes through its gorge at dawn, the early light catching the white water of the rapids while the surrounding forest remains in blue shadow. Henmi's landscapes of moving water were among his most accomplished works, the energy of rapids requiring a graphic solution that conveyed motion through still means — the broken white of foam against dark rock, the curved lines of current.
