Description
An elephant rendered in Henmi's woodblock technique — unusual subject for an artist primarily known for landscape and urban scenes, suggesting either a zoo visit (Ueno Zoo being nearby his Tokyo life) or a response to a specific encounter with these animals. The elephant's massive, complex form — all curves and wrinkles and weight — challenged the printmaker to find a graphic equivalent for a visual experience far outside the usual scope of the sosaku-hanga landscape tradition.
