Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
A coastal village is depicted from the water or from a vantage that reveals both the settlement and the sea, the two elements that define seaside community life. Henmi's handling of coastal subjects was shaped by his early years in Wakayama, a prefecture whose coastline was integral to its character, and he returned to the seaside village subject with the familiarity of someone for whom such places held personal as well as aesthetic meaning. The print belongs to his period of most concentrated [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) output.
