Tsukishima is a reclaimed island in Tokyo Bay, its streets built on landfill in the late Meiji period and soon populated with the working-class communities of the city's expanding port district. Henmi knew this part of Tokyo well, having contributed to One Hundred New Views of Tokyo, and a sunset seen from this industrial waterfront would combine the natural beauty of evening light with the man-made landscape of a working harbor. The subject combines the romantic tradition of sunset imagery with the gritty modernity of urban Tokyo.
