Description

Shirahige Jinja, on the western shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, is recognized by its vermillion torii standing in the lake water — an arrangement reminiscent of Itsukushima and a frequent subject for shin-hanga and sosaku-hanga landscape artists. Tokuriki's view treats the shrine as a meisho-e in the Hiroshige lineage, with the torii anchoring the composition against a broad expanse of water and the distant Hira mountains. Prints of this kind typically use heavy bokashi gradations in the lake surface and sky to convey atmosphere, while the keyblock holds the architectural lines of the torii and the shrine roofs in crisp outline. Lake Biwa, only a short distance from Kyoto, was a recurring subject for Tokuriki throughout his long career; he returned to its shoreline shrines, pine groves, and seasonal weather repeatedly across the series of Kyoto-area landscapes that occupied much of his post-war output.
